Crazy Time…

Posted: October 21, 2010 in Science, Work

I’ve been having a bit of a crazy time at work lately, and it’s not going to get much better in the near term. I’m working on a grant renewal proposal for my boss in collaboration with three other people in the group. Since I’ve never written an NSF proposal before, this is a new experience for me, and I’m a bit intimidated. Also, it’s a big grant, which is a bit intimidating as well; I’m grateful for the experience writing this though. Once I stumble out onto my own as an independent scientist, I’m going to have to be able to write fundable proposals (on my own, with no collaborators, ack!) and I’ve never been good at this sort of thing. In that regard, I’m quite thankful for this opportunity – I’m learning a lot about what makes a good proposal, how to write fundable proposals, and what agencies are looking to fund.

Also, I’ve gotten to the point where I need to scrape together time to sit down and write papers. I’ve finished enough research for several of them, but it just keeps getting pushed aside as new ideas come to the forefront. Consequently, I haven’t been publishing anything, and they tell me that this is a “bad thing” ™.  So I have to get my butt in gear, and get some science actually out the door, so that I can become famous and take over the world. Or more realistically, get a “permanent” job in academia.

Does anyone have a time machine I can borrow?
